Since 2009, NIH and ATCC have called on researchers to conduct STR identification of cells and begin establishing a cell STR database. Nowadays, cell STR identification has become the gold standard for identifying cell identity and cross contamination. Most authoritative journals also require authors to provide proof of cell STR identification when submitting their articles. In the production process of the biopharmaceutical industry, STR profiling has become an industry consensus for cell identification in cell bank assays.
